Citywide traffic sign replacement program kicks off

Published on November 8, 2019 under RRnews

Traffic control signs throughout the City will be easier to see in the coming months. Over the next nine months, 7,120 traffic control signs will be replaced to come into compliance with federal retroreflectivity standards.

City crews are replacing the signs which were provided by Centerline Supply for $250,729.37.

The signs are being replaced to comply with sign retroreflectivity levels laid out in the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

The MUTCD provides for six methods that cities can use to maintain traffic sign retroreflectivity at or above the minimum levels. The City selected the blanket replacement option which allows for sign replacement every 7-10 years. This option does not require an annual retroreflectivity scan which saves the City $105,000 annually.

The City previously enlisted Transmap Corporation to classify the full traffic sign inventory and integrate the information with the City’s existing Geographic Information System. This inventory assists City staff in tracking and maintaining sign conditions throughout the City.
