Library wins wildflower grant

Round Rock Public Library received a #PlantWildflowers Campaign grant to help our community support the native pollinators in our area.

The library will provide this support though educational programming–and also the planting of tiny wildflower meadows.

Of the 327 libraries that applied, RRPL was one of 50 grant recipients, and the only one in Texas.

We are excited that our grant programming will align so beautifully alongside Round Rock’s Bee City, USA initiative.

Sharing seeds for #OneSquareFoot meadows

The library received 2000 packets of native wildflower seeds, $1000 for books and programming, and a copy of the movie My Garden of a Thousand Bees.

Visit the Children’s Reference Desk to pick up your seed packet.

You’ll have just enough seeds for a #OneSquareFoot meadow. You might plant them in a pot, in garden, or in an open space.

Fun and informative programming for all ages

Most of the Library’s educational efforts will be focused on the fall planting season.

Even so, the library did a soft rollout of the educational programs through the Parks and Recreation Department Pop-Up Play Day programs.

The Youth Services department began #PlantWildflowers programs at the end of July with a PreK Playtime themed around butterflies, and a tween LEGO(R) Robotics session that featured a pollinating robot.

Watch the online calendar in August, September, and October for events for all ages.

Highlights include:

  • a Laura Freeman concert for kids
  • more pollinator-friendly PreK Playtimes
  • a screening of My Garden of a Thousand Bees
  • a bioblitz Citizen Science event for all ages
Books! Books! Books!

The grant also provided funding for books.

RRPL librarians selected books just right for our community. The books began arriving in early August.
