Celebrate your freedom to read!

ALA Banned Books Week 2015Each September, the American Library Association (ALA) observes Banned Books Week, which celebrates the freedom to read. The event highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community – librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types – in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. (ALA, 2015)

This year’s event focuses on Young Adult books. “Young Adult books are challenged more frequently than any other type of book,” said Judith Platt, chair of the Banned Books Week National Committee. “These are the books that speak most immediately to young people, dealing with many of the difficult issues that arise in their own lives, or in the lives of their friends. These are the books that give young readers the ability to safely explore the sometimes scary real world. This Banned Books Week is a call to action, to remind everyone that young people need to be allowed the freedom to read widely, to read books that are relevant for them, and to be able to make their own reading choices.”

Check out the ALA’s list of frequently challenged books. What better place to celebrate Banned Books Week than at the Round Rock Public Library!
