Round Rock-Austin among most vibrant art communities

The Round Rock-Austin metropolitan area landed in the top 20 vibrant art communities across the country, according to a recent study.

Southern Methodist University’s National Center for Arts Research (NCAR) ranked the cities 18th in the nation in its fourth annual Arts Vibrancy Index, which considers more than 900 communities across the country.

“Creativity is a desirable and necessary element for an innovative and thriving community,” said Dr. Zannie Voss, director of NCAR. “Aside from being an engine of job creation and economic growth, arts and culture contribute to social well-being and are essential to creating more livable, safe, memorable and connected communities.”

The overall index is composed of three dimensions examined on a per capita basis: supply, demand, and government support. Supply is assessed by the total number of arts providers in the community, including the number of arts and culture organizations and employees, independent artists, and entertainment firms. Demand is gauged by the total nonprofit arts dollars in the community, including program revenue, contributed revenue, total expenses, and total compensation. Lastly, the level of government support is based on state and federal arts dollars and grants.

The City of Round Rock’s Arts and Culture Division works directly with Round Rock Arts. Since 2009, Round Rock Arts has been showcasing the work of established Central Texas artists and encouraging emerging artists through exhibitions throughout the Round Rock community. Round Rock Arts manages ArtSpace, located at 231 East Main, Suite 160, which is a venue for the exhibition of local art in downtown.  ArtSpace hosts community events, artists demonstrations and lectures throughout the year.

Popular arts attractions in Round Rock include Sculptfest, public art pieces, Chalk Walk during the first weekend of each October and a variety of events hosted by various community organizations. Round Rock is currently hosting 18 original pieces by Allan Houser, one of the most renowned Native American painters and Modernist sculptors of the 20th century, in Centennial Plaza, 301 W. Bagdad.
