Police accept applications for 31st Citizen’s Police Academy

Published on August 19, 2015 under RRnews

The Round Rock Police Department is now conducting open enrollment for the 31st Citizen’s Police Academy. This is a 10-week educational opportunity that gives participants a behind the scenes look at the many functions of the police department.

The Citizens Police Academy is a hands-on course where participants drive a police car in an obstacle course, go to a shooting range, use Laser Shot simulators with virtual targeting and also have the chance to ride out with patrol officers during a shift. Citizens will meet officers from every division: Animal Control, K9 Unit, Training and Recruiting, Dispatch, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations, Crime Scene, Evidence, Patrol, School Resource Program, Criminal Investigations and more.

“Every person that participates says that it is truly an eye-opening experience and they walk away with a better understanding of all aspects of law enforcement,” said Joseph Claypool, Community Affairs Officer who leads the Academy.

The classes are held every Tuesday night from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the department located at 2701 N. Mays Street. The course concludes with a graduation ceremony and dinner. Space is limited and the maximum class size is 25. A background check and clear driving record are required to enroll in the program. Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for Tues. Sept. 8. For more information call 512-671-2871 or download the application.
