Councilmember Kris Whitfield

Place 6 Councilmember Kris Whitfield announced her resignation from the City Council at the Thursday, Sept. 14, meeting. Whitfield and her husband are moving to Wyoming, where they have a second home. She said her resignation will be effective on Oct. 6. Her last Council meeting would be Sept. 28.

“We love Round Rock and love serving this community, but the time has come for us to move on to the next phase of our lives,” said Whitfield, whose husband Eric is a former Round Rock ISD Trustee. “It’s been an honor to serve on the City Council and play a role in the City’s amazing successes over the past decade.”

Whitfield was elected to the City Council in May 2007 and served as Mayor Pro-Tem from June 2012-June 2014.

Among the projects Whitfield is proudest of is the creation and expansion of the Play for All Abilities Park and the growth in the arts in general and the establishment of ArtSpace in particular. She was also involved in City Council decisions to build the Round Rock Sports Center and Round Rock Multipurpose Complex to grow the Sports Capital of Texas tourism program, redevelop the Downtown district, and begin targeting destination retailers like Round Rock Premium Outlets, IKEA and Bass Pro Shops.

Whitfield was named the Round Rock Citizen of the Year in 2011 and named a Woman of Distinction by the Central Texas Girl Scouts in 2010. She serves as a Director of the Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority. She is a Past Chairman of the Round Rock Chamber and has served as Chamber Board Secretary, on the Finance Committee and is former Chair of the Workforce & Talent Development Committee. She also served on the Economic Development Advisory Committee.

Her community involvement also extends to the YMCA of Greater Williamson County, the Play4All Foundation, Rotary Club of Round Rock, Round Rock Arts and Round Rock Foundation for the Arts. She’s also served on the Round Rock ISD Partners in Education Advisory Board and Texas State University’s Advisory Council for Round Rock.

The Place 6 vacancy must be filled within 120 days of the effective date of the resignation. A special election would likely be held in December, with candidate filing to occur in mid-October. The City Council is expected to call the special election at a future meeting.
