Council votes to move several road projects forward

Published on March 23, 2018 under RRnews

An efficient transportation network takes careful planning and execution, and City Council authorized important steps toward making several projects a reality at Thursday’s City Council meeting.

The following items were approved:

Contract for construction of Texas Avenue Road project

The primary purpose of the Texas Avenue project is to improve the flow of traffic, reduce travel times, and increase connectivity for both motorists and pedestrians by constructing a 30-foot-wide two-lane roadway to connect Greenhill Drive and Country Aire Drive. It will also include upgrades to wastewater infrastructure. Construction will consist of asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, concrete sidewalk, concrete driveway construction, pavement markings, signage, storm sewer extension, and grading. The contract was awarded to low-bidder Jimmy Evans Company for $579,009.

Acquisition of land for RM 620

Council voted to acquire two more parcels of land as part of its ongoing efforts to secure all of the right-of-way needed for the RM 620 project. In conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation, the City is developing a project to improve RM 620 from Deepwood Drive to IH-35. The purpose of the proposed project is to improve safety and enhance mobility in this area. The design of the proposed improvements is underway and the federal environmental review has been completed. Utility relocations will follow as right-of-way is acquired. The project will be bid by TxDOT in April 2019 with an expected construction duration of 27-30 months.

Contract for engineering of Gattis School Road, segment 3

Council voted to select Rodriguez Transportation Group to prepare schematics as well as plans, specifications, and an estimate for segment 3 of the Gattis School Road project. This portion of the project will reconstruct the existing four-lane roadway to a major divided arterial road with improved pedestrian and bicycle facilities. Right and left turn bays will be provided at the intersections where Gattis School Road meets A. W. Grimes Boulevard, South Creek Drive, Joyce Lane and Double Creek Drive. The turn lane improvements will enhance traffic flow at the existing major retailers within the area.

Annexation and interlocal agreement for Hairy Man Road improvements

Council approved an agreement with Williamson County that subsequently allowed the City of Round Rock to annex a portion of Hairy Man Road between Walsh Drive and Sam Bass Road. The City will take over operations and maintenance on this portion of roadway after the County completes the widening of the road to provide for two lanes and two-foot shoulders on each side. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the 2019 calendar year.
