City to end red light camera program on Dec. 31

Published on December 22, 2015 under RRnews

The City’s red light camera program will come to an end on Dec. 31.

The City Council voted in October to end the City’s contract with RedFlex, the red light camera program provider. The City had placed 10 cameras at six intersections.

The City Council opted out of the program because data showed safety was not improving at intersections with the cameras, and there was no recourse if violators refused to pay the civil fine.

The first cameras were operational in December 2011. Revenue generated from fines paid for installation, operation and maintenance costs of the system.

Police will be stepping up efforts to inform drivers of the dangers of running red lights, using public safety announcements like the one below.
