City Council cancels May 7 election
Because only one candidate filed for each seat up for election this year, the City Council voted to cancel the May 7 election.
Rene Flores, a former Planning and Zoning Commission member, was the only candidate for the Place 2 vacancy, while current Councilmember Kris Whitfield was the only candidate to file for Place 6. The City Council also opted to postpone a vote on four proposed amendments to the City Charter.
The Place 2 vacancy was created when Mayor Pro-Tem George White announced he would not be seeking re-election after his term expired. The charter amendments related to: filling City Council vacancies; allowing employees other than the City Manager to approve certain contracts; clarify terms used to reference the Mayor, City Councilmembers and City staff; and changing candidate filing fees and signatures required for a candidate to petition to be on the ballot.
Canceling the election will save the City approximately $50,000.
